GRADING

All tests, homework, labs, and in class assignments have a point value.  Points are totaled and assigned a grade each semester based on the percent of the total possible points.  The semester exam is worth 20% of the semester grade.   The online grade book program will be update in approximately 2 week intervals. Check online grading for accuracy of your grade.

LATE WORK    Will not be accepted for credit.  Students are encouraged to complete assignments in order to maintain an understanding of the concepts.

ABSENCE     It is the students’ responsibility to find out about any work missed.   Make up work due to a planned absence before the absence and make up work for an unplanned absence 1 day after return.

SAFETY    Students who do not follow expected safety guidelines, i.e. wearing goggles, will be removed from the activity/lab and receive a Zero on the assignment

STUDENT HANDBOOK:  PLEASE READ PAGES 53-54 IF YOU HAVE A PLANNED ABSENCE.

FYI:  Students receive a packet for each unit with the calendar for the unit.  Homework, tests, and classroom activities are placed on the calendar to help students organize, plan, and budget time.

Students are required to bring a calculator to class every day.  Students who come to class without materials may receive a zero for the activity/ assignment or may have to rent materials  (such as goggles, etc.)

Students are expected to follow all of the policies set forth in the student handbook.

District 230’s Successful Schools – Successful Students Touchstone ensures students demonstrate “character that embodies accountability, responsibility, integrity, ethical citizenship, respectful relationships and positive leadership”.  Actions involving plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, recycling of previously submitted work, and/or unauthorized collaboration on tests, quizzes, daily work, or projects will not be tolerated.  These actions will result in academic consequences, possible Deans’ Office consequences, as well as potential exclusion from various clubs, activities, athletic teams, and/or school or local scholarships and other types of recognition.

How to Improve Grades

TEST ANALYSIS:  Students check wrong answers on tests to determine the reason the question was missed.  The data is collected for each test.  Students should be able to determine the reason for missing questions and work to avoid those mistakes on future tests.     Discuss ways to improve.

  1. D= Did not know answer.  Meaning: I did not study this, or learn this.  Study more or study differently, ask questions in class, make homework corrections, write questions as you are doing homework, pay attention in class.  Seek out extra help and practice.
  2. R = Did not read question.  Meaning: when we went over the questions in class, I could pick the correct answer.   Check work over at the end of a test.
  3. U = Did not understand question.   Meaning: I did not really know what the question was asking me to find or do.  Find the question word in the sentence and link it to a subject.  Focus on the subject of the question.  Ask teacher for clarification.
  4. C= Calculation error.  Meaning: I used my calculator incorrectly, I used the wrong formula, I put in the wrong numbers by accident into my calculator or used the calculator incorrectly.  Practice using the calculator.   Check work at end of test.
  5. O- Oops.  Meaning: I knew the correct answer, but I colored in the wrong answer.  Check work at end of test.
  6. T- Ran out of time.  Don’t spend too much time on a single question.  Discuss options with teacher.

UNIT CALENDAR/PLANNER/BOARD

Use the unit calendar to keep track of due dates for assignments, projects, tests, etc.  Check the daily agenda on the board for updates and changes to the calendar.

Write down assignments in planner.

TEACHER HELP

I am available for help almost every morning from 7:00 am to 7:55 am.

Attend the scheduled extra study sessions before a test.

Make an appointment to get help on a specific topic, assignment, or concept.

Use intervention time to get help.

Test taking tips:  When studying just isn’t enough…

*Attend the study session before the test, which is usually held from 7:10-7:55 on test days.

*Identify problem areas to ask questions in class.  While doing homework, write down the topics, ideas, explanations, etc, that you do not understand.

*Make homework corrections.

*Study with a partner who is doing well in the class.

*Rearrange the information in a different format: example if the information is in paragraph form, put it in chart form to show the relationships between the parts, or if there are new words then draw pictures.

*Use the online book resources for extra practice.

*Make an appointment with the teacher for extra help.

*Arrange to take the test in parts.
